本課程立基在文學是一種社會文化現象的前提，提供宏觀的理論與方法基礎，試圖掌握文學與現代社會之關係。 |

課程目標 |
本課程立基在文學是一種社會文化現象的前提，提供宏觀的理論與方法基礎，試圖掌握文學與現代社會之關係。亦即，文化是人類對抗自然而來的人為、符號之運用，而文學又是人類文化中最高度人為、符號的運用。因此，文化社會理論將是理解文學的鎖鑰之一。
本課程探討的主題「文化」，就如Raymond Williams說的，「是當代社會學最複雜的兩三個詞彙之一」，因為觀照角度的差異，討論文化的學術流派也常有爭議，並展現在文化－文明、唯心－唯物、主觀－客觀、理念－利益等等各種對立；對文化場域的界定，也由指涉封閉社會的心靈產物，逐漸進到跨界文化、權力操弄的議題。因此課程目標是透過幾個重要思想家來御繁於簡，觀察文化表象隱含的內在危機，並用以思考如何觀察文學家以符號捕捉社會的現象。

課程進行主要是閱讀原典（英文版為主，中文版為輔），期能強化同學直探文化理論思想家原始面貌的能力，並希望以「進入西方以離開西方」為己任，據此更有效地站在理論的高度統攝文學材料，進而落實將台灣文學作為本土文化現象的研究機會。修課同學須輪值在第四周擔任主題報告、著作蒐錄、二手蒐錄。
（1）主題報告：研讀教材（英文30-50頁為度），並製作報告大綱（至少2頁）。讀解重點：作者想解決什麼問題？反對誰的作法？借助誰的幫助？本文如何構成？論證如何推進？得到什麼結論？
*可借助各種中譯本，但務須忠於原著，特定、重要、可疑的字句須加註英文。可加註自身或二手的批評與感想，但須區隔標記。
（2）著作蒐錄：（Endnote軟體製作）當周思想家的（中英文）著作年表。
（3）二手蒐錄：（Endnote軟體製作）當周思想家的二手研究或批判書目，以及引用當周思想家理論的台灣相關研究書目，如果可能，將其中一篇台灣研究帶到課堂討論他如何使用理論。
